Passwords: R.I.P. 🪦
Popular payments service PayPal just entered the passwordless future.
PayPal is one of the first big companies to enable passkeys — a new, more secure login method for online accounts and services.
Developed by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium, passkeys are a new industry standard supported by the big three platforms providers — Apple, Google and Microsoft.
Apple is the first to integrate passkeys into iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1 and macOS Ventura.
Passkeys use cryptographic key pairs to dispense with passwords, making users immune to phishing scams or data breaches. Logins instead are authenticated with Touch ID or Face ID.
PayPal is surely soon to be joined by a host of other websites, apps and services — making passwords a thing of the past.
Hallelujah.

News and opinion
PayPal just adopted passkeys as an easy and secure log in method for user accounts. Users with an iPhone, iPad or Mac will be the first able to take advantage of the passwordless biometric security system because Apple built support for it into its devices. Passkeys are an improvement over passwords, as they can’t phished, stolen or guessed.
Your iPhone just learned some new tricks.
Plus, more on this week's updates:
Early reviews of iPad 10 compliment its larger display, relocated camera and faster processor. But they also have plenty to say about the steep increase in price. Read on to see if the new “budget” iPad, which now starts at $449, is right for you.
Apple could switch to solid-state volume and power buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro series. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has made this claim based on his latest supply chain checks. To replicate the feeling of pressing a physical button, Apple will add two Taptic Engines to 2023’s Pro iPhones.
If you own lots of Mac apps, it’s a chore keeping them up to date for optimum functionality and security without a utility like MacUpdater.
Apple put its latest processor in the 2022 iPad Pro and it gave the tablet a significant performance boost. The M2 chip make it almost 20% faster than its predecessor. And it’s almost 80% faster than the 2018 iPad Pro.
Apple apparently plans to “grande size” the iPad. A version with a 16-inch display is reportedly being developed. If true, this will be a considerable jump up from the Apple’s largest current tablet, which includes a 12.9-inch screen. And the device – perhaps called iPad Ultra – will have a display the same size as Apple’’s biggest MacBook.
Apple positioned the new iPad 10 as the successor to last year’s iPad 9, but the two are far more different that their names suggest. The just-released tablet has a long list of improvements, including a larger screen. But it also comes at a substantially higher price.
An Apple executive confirmed that iPhone will drop the Lightning port in favor of USB-C. It’s a change being forced by the European Parliament, and Apple VP Greg Joswiak says the company won’t try to get around the new regulation.
