Is this the best Apple device for writing?

Don't believe the doomsayers -- Vision Pro is good for the grind

If you’re going to spend $3,500 on a piece of high-tech equipment, it’s probably got to be more than a glorified private movie theater.

That, of course, is the big criticism of Apple’s pricey Vision Pro headset: It’s great for watching movies, but not much else.

Tell that to D Griffin Jones, Cult of Mac’s resident how-to writer, who uses his Vision Pro headset all day, every day for his work.

Also in this edition of The Weekender:

  • iOS 18 is chock full of handy new features, but there are five lesser-known ones that might be super helpful to you. Don’t miss #3!

  • One of Apple’s most beloved product lines was shuffled off the stage this week. The iPod is officially obsolete.

  • Apple is perhaps the most secretive company on Earth. It never mutters so much as a peep about unreleased products. But remember when an Apple engineer left a prototype iPhone 4 in a bar and Gizmodo got hold of it? It’s happened again, but this time much worse. Russian YouTubers somehow got acquired the upcoming M4 MacBook Pro, and ran benchmarks, unboxing, the whole nine yards. Ouch!

  • We have a couple of cool gadgets on sale this week. There’s a flexible stand with a built-in USB-C hub that turns your iPad/MacBook into a “sunflower” iMac G4; and a surprisingly-inexpensive travel hub with 10 ports, including a high-power USB PD port, plus a wireless iPhone MagSafe charger for just $24.

  • Also, Amazon’s Prime Big Deals Days two-days sales event is still running! If you’re not sick of it by now, there’s lots of savings to be had still on Apple gear, including a M1 Mac mini for about $400 and the new Beats Pill speaker for under $100. (Prices have been jumping around a bit, but were current at the time of publication. They might even be lower now).

  • And if you’re in the market for a great-sounding pair of ANC headphones, we hands-on review soundcore’s new high-end Space One Pro headphones. They sound great, are very comfortable and have epic battery life. We awarded them four-and-a-half stars out of five.

Enjoy your weekend!
